WhatsApp STATUS: Another Move of Facebook against Snapchat

  admin

Snapchat started as an app for sending disappearing messages. Over the years it’s managed to evolve into a rapidly growing social network with more than 150 million daily active users. But Snapchat represents an existential threat to Facebook because it has managed to redefine how people share through photos and videos. While Facebook has become an essential utility for connecting people, Snapchat has popularized a new way of communicating that’s highly visual, ephemeral, and fun.

Firstly, Mark Zuckerberg and co. have tried to clone parts of Snapchat with failed apps like Slingshot and later copying its most popular feature (Stories) in its Instagram and Facebook Messenger apps. But Facebook has never really thrown its full weight behind taking Snapchat head on.

Now Facebook is using what’s app to get this feature, which is used by billion people for social networking. This feature, named What’s app STATUS, will work most likely the same way as it now works on Instagram.

WhatsApp Status feature allows you to share images and videos to your contact list for a limited period of time. You also have the option to scribble on images and videos with the help of the pencil tool, as well as to adding emoji and text. Snapchat’s Snaps feature basically works the same way. The new feature seems to replace the Contacts tab in WhatsApp top navigation menu.

The new Status bar is currently available on WhatsApp latest beta version (2.16.336), though it’s hidden from regular users. To use it, you have to do a search in the Settings menu. The feature will eventually roll out to all users across platforms.
