Rumors regarding 3D sensors for facial recognition now take another turn by confirming that Apple is planning to integrate 3D lasers to iPhone 8 rear camera. Fast company has declared that the iPhone will utilize vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), which is an evidence that Apple is acquiring VCSEL components from different suppliers.

Autofocus abilities of the camera would be much better with the VCSEL system, also the depth perception for AR experiences.

It isn’t much of a shock that Apple is improving AR experiences in its smartphones and other devices given the fact that Tim Cook prefers AR over VR. Moreover, Apple announced ARKit at the event of WWDC 2017 so the AR foray is already sealed.

Question is whether iPhone 8 arrives with VCSEL tech or not, but it depends on how Apple engineers make it possible. Also, the system would be part of the rear of the handset. To see whether the leak is true or not, we have to wait till September.
