Oculus company is developing new wireless VR headset which will be the standalone hardware as no PC or phone will be required to run it. Price of the new VR headset will be $200, more economical than the Oculus Rift. Launch of this new VR device is slated for 2018.
The Oculus is more interested in staying on the middle ground. Code name of the device is ‘Pacific’ powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processor of its own, probably like the one being used in smartphones.
Finished hardware of the Pacific will be smaller than the old Oculus Rift. It will be lighter than the Samsung Gear VR. Standalone wireless VR headset will have raw power for VR games.
Loose end of this new device would be the positioning. The device won’t be making use of the position tracking. This means to track positions spatially; a limitation to immersion and more. News reports also telling us that the device would have the wireless controller remote.
