Once more we have a story for iPhone that is being forced by Government officials to unlock. This is the iPhone of a 29-years old woman which has been allegedly accused of theft. This time the FBI is not attempting to crack it itself as 10 unsuccessful attempts will lead to wiping off the iPhone permanently.

However, as the FBI wants evidence, it is forcing the woman to unlock its iPhone via Touch ID. The phone has been seized by authorities at her Boyfriend’s house. She has been found having alleged contacts with Armenian gang member by the name of Sevak Mesrobian, and her phone is being probed to carry out investigation on this.

The US Supreme Court has granted the warrants to search for her phone, and the fingerprints can be accessed without the Judge’s permission. This has brought forward the debate of personal privacy as unlocking someone’s phone must include higher orders and just not warrants to be followed.

A law professor has put this notion in a very serious note saying that it equals self-incriminating act that violates 5th Amendment. However, Albert Gidari, the director of privacy at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society, says it is possible and touching the fingerprint scanner on her ID does not violate 5th amendment because “Unlike disclosing passcodes, you are not compelled to speak or say what’s ‘in your mind’ to law enforcement. ‘Put your finger here’ is not testimonial or self-incriminating.”
