Despite the time and again reminder of mobile operators to release the GST of 19.5% imposed by the Punjab Government, the PRA is consistently pending the issue. The tax was imposed in May whereby the mobile operators started opposing that it is threat to ongoing conversion of large numbers of people to mobile internet. The taxes will definitely limit that spectrum.

This is a time of great concern as the mobile data spectrum is on rise due to the introduction of 4G and 3G services esp. in rural and remote areas. While both the infrastructure and consumer base need a strong reason to adapt to this technological shift, imposing taxes is just reverting the people to old ways of communication. Several promises has been made by Government to lift the tax.  Ayesha Ghaus also ensured that this step will be reconsidered in the light of growing technological demands.

However, the Punjab Government is silent and the PRA is charging the GST up to 19.5% with the objection that taxes cannot be revoked in the absence of written declaration by Government, unwritten assurance won’t be entertained. Many a time official statements had been made, but as no action was taken, PRA is bound to follow the rule, Collect Taxes.

The government again swayed from its promise and this time operators are waiting for long to see when they will be relived from tax imposition that is really shrinking the mobile internet market.
