Samsung Gear Smartwatches with Google Wear OS

Previously in the month of May this year, famous tipster Evan Blass shared the news that Samsung Gear smartwatches running Google’s Wear OS were spotted on the wrists of company’s employees. This ignited rumors of Samsung turning to Google’s platform for its future smartwatches.

However, a few weeks later, Blass updated that the aforementioned smartwatches, spotted earlier were just one-offs manufactured by Google, effectively pouring water on the flaming rumors.

However now, it looks like Samsung may have plans of installing Wear OS on its smartwatches after all. According to Ice Universe (who has a solid track record when it comes to leaks related to Samsung), the device will likely carry the ‘Galaxy Watch’ moniker.

The naming convention falls inline with Samsung’s use of the ‘Galaxy’ moniker with its Android-powered devices. The leakster further reveals the watch is expected to feature blood pressure measurement (the company already has a patent for blood pressure tracking on smartwatch.)

The tweet also mentions PLP package. For starters, PLP stands for Panel Level Package, and is a technology aimed at making the smartwatch processor slimmer and cheaper. Other features the tipster revealed include new UX interaction and 470 mAh battery.

If you remember, there were rumors last month that the Gear S4 will feature PLP, and will pack in a significant larger battery than its predecessor. So it’s likely – and as Ice Universe’s tweet also says – that it’s the upcoming Gear S4 that will be powered by the Wear OS.

Needless to say, none of this is officially confirmed yet, so it’s not advised to get too excited as yet. As for availability, the Gear S4 is said to be arriving along with the Samsung Galaxy Note9 on August 9 later this year. However, the price of Samsung Gear S3 Classic smartwatch in Pakistan is Rs. 36,000.
